So what is the best gun CLP or Cleaner Lubricant Protectant?
I found a really thorough gun CLP test which consisted of lubrication and corrosion protection but did not test cleaning abilities.
46 CLP’s were tested. Here are the contestants:
- 3 in 1 Oil
- Ace Silicone Grease
- Archoil AR4200
- ATF – Automatic Transmission Fluid
- Atsko Silicone Spray
- Breakfree CLP
- Breakfree CO
- Boeshield T-9
- CRC 3-36
- Fluid Film
- G96 Synth
- Gun Seal
- Hoppe’s #9 Solvent
- Hoppe’s Elite
- Hoppe’s Gun Oil
- Hoppe’s MDL
- Hornady One Shot
- M-Pro 7 LPX
- Paste Wax
- Pennzoil Synth
- Quicken HP
- Rand CLP
- Rem Oil Regular
- Rem Oil W/ Moistureguard
- RIG #2
- Rust Prevent
- Slip 2000
- Strike Hold
- Super Lube
- Weapon Shield
- WD-40 Specialist
I have used a few of these in the past but I am a M-Pro7 man now. But I do like Ballistol and BreakFree. I do use those 2 occasionally.

2 corrosion prevention tests were done using squares of steel. One group was exposed to a salt water spray and another the elements like rain, heat, UV, wind, etc. Each square was treated with one of the CLP’s and left exposed to the elements/salt spray until failure (rust).
The 1st corrosion test was concluded after 196 hours of exposure after a saltwater spray. After 196 hours all CLP’s failed. Half of them failed in 24 hours. The top 3 were Rust Prevent, WD-40 Specialist and Hornady One Shot. Froglube and Gun Seal came in second at 96 hours.
Here is a video of the corrosion test setup.
Here are the results from the 1st corrosion test. You can see which ones worked and which did not.
The 2nd corrosion test was exposure to the elements. After 144 hours the test was ended with 3 surviving. The best for this test were FrogLube, WD-40 Specialist and Hornady’s One Shot.
Here is a video of the results from the elements corrosion test.
The lubricant test was performed using a metal sled type setup. It is quite ingenious and very useful for this type of test. Anyway this test records how much friction is reduced by the CLP. It is compared with no lubricant.

FrogLube was the top lubricant out of 46 CLP’s with Hornady’s One Shot coming in 2nd and Barricade coming in 3rd place.
Here is a video demonstrating the lubricant test.
Here are the results from all of the tests.
Lubricity Test 1: Froglube, Hornady’s One Shot and Barricade
Lubricity Test 2: Barricade, Hornady’s One Shot and WD-40 Regular (Froglube was #4)
Corrosion Test 1: Froglube, Hornday’s One Shot and WD-40 Specialist
Corrosion Test 2: Froglube, Hornady’s One Shot and WD-40 Specialist

Most CLP’s and gun oils are great at preventing corrosion for short periods of time. It takes a thicker oil/grease to perform well as a gun oil for storage.
