Hoppes No. 9 Gun Bore Cleaner has been popular since 1903. It is very effective in loosening and removing carbon, powder fouling, copper, lead and other bullet fouling.
I remember when I was a kid, my dad used to clean his .22 rifle and 12 gauge shotgun with Hoppes No. 9 gun bore cleaner on the kitchen table. He used to put several layers of news papers down on the table and then clean his guns. It is still popular today…40 years later.
I have tested many gun bore cleaners including Hoppes No. 9 Gun Bore Cleaner. It did very well. My gun cleaner test consisted of burning 3 charges of smokeless powder on a metal plate and then applying a gun cleaner. I let it soak for 10 minutes and then attempted to wipe it clean with a few patches. I did not use any type of brush to scrub the area. I simply took a clean patch and wiped the area.
Hoppes No. 9 Gun Bore Cleaner is an effective carbon and powder fouling cleaner. When cleaning, I always soak the area to be cleaned with gun solvent/cleaner for 10 minutes and then patch. I have found this soak time really speeds up cleaning and removes more fouling. Try it next time you clean you firearms.
If your gun barrel only has carbon/powder fouling, you should not need to bore brush it. If you soak it with Hoppes No. 9 Gun Bore Cleaner for 10 minutes, the fouling should wipe out easily with several clean patches. However if you have lead or copper fouling, then you might need to use a bore brush to break the metal fouling free.
