Hoppe’s Gun Medic is a cleaning and lubricating spray on product.
So how well does it clean?
The only way to know for sure it to test it right?
Hoppe’s Gun Medic vs H4831 smokeless powder residue
Let’s take a look at the test equipment…
I use a metal base (6061-T6 Aluminum alloy) that is finished with 400 grit sandpaper for the gun cleaner test. I pour about 50 grains of smokeless powder on the metal base and then ignite it. I repeat this 3 times to make sure there is a good amount of stuck-on powder residue. I then apply gun cleaner and let it soak for 10 minutes. I then attempt to wipe it clean.
Let’s get started…
Here’s the Hoppe’s Gun Medic, H4831 smokeless powder, cleaning patches and lighter. H4831 is pretty slow burning so it’s pretty safe to experiment with.
I always clean the metal base before starting the gun cleaner test. Here I cleaned the surface with the Hoppe’s Gun Medic before starting the test. You can see that some dirt/oil/cleaner residue was removed from the metal base. Now let’s add some gun powder.
Here is the H4831 smokeless powder…about 50 grains.
This is a close up of the burnt powder residue. It’s stuck pretty good on the metal base. Now let’s try to clean it with the Hoppe’s Gun Medic gun cleaner.
I sprayed the powder residue thoroughly and will let it soak for 10 minutes.
Here is the powder residue soaking. It’s pretty saturated.
After 10 minutes, I try to wipe the metal base clean. The heavy carbon wipes somewhat easily off but not cleanly. There is a lot of yellowish residue and some carbon that does not come off. The Hoppe’s Gun Medic evaporates and therefore does not penetrate well. It’s also a combo product, meaning it’s a gun cleaner and lube. Combo or multi-purpose gun products typically do not perform well at any one task.
Here’s a close up view. It just did not clean well. It might be a good product for the field where you need something quick to flush out loose powder and dirt. Hoppe’s Gun Medic did not perform as well as some of the other straight gun cleaners. If you want to check it out, here is a link…Hoppe’s Gun Medic Gun Cleaner & Lube at Amazon.com
